The web is millions upon millions of pages, each one containing a potentially useful idea. The portal below will generate a random website based on the Yahoo! search engine. When you click in the portal, a random URL will be generated which you can paste into your address field to visit that site. Use the suggestions in the yellow sidebar to generate ideas from your randomly selected web page.

A note of caution! The Web Window generates a random page to any web destination. This includes the possibility of sites that are--ahem--questionable. Use your best judgement. We take absolutely no responsibility for content once you leave our site.

Information online ranges from the truly useful to the utterly bizarre. When you hit a site that looks interesting, go to its links page and you'll often discover a whole community of similar web pages. Anything on a site could spur an idea--the subject of the site, a photo, a heading, a name or place.

Every web page is someone's creativity at work. Some are much better than others at communicating their ideas. When you hit a dud site, ask yourself what would have made it better--thinking of those improvements can lead to ideas for your own project.

Here are some ways to use a random website creatively:

Look for ways the site could address your project or challenge. What is it about the site that relates to what you are trying to accomplish?

Force yourself to deal with the site in front of you. You can do a search of the web on your topic--but the point of this exercise is to use a random site, not one that specifically relates to your project.

Examine how the site approaches its own content. How did they express their own ideas, and is their method applicable to your project?

Look at specific elements of the site, from pictures to names and places. Are any of these items relevant to your project?

Link around to similar sites by checking out the links page. It may lead you to something even more interesting.
