Browsing

Whether online or in print, browsing is a creative exercise that is often used in conjunction with idea generation. While browsing is a form of creative input, it differs from the ideas of reading or learning, which long-term information gathering techniques. When you read, you may read for the sheer pleasure of reading, or the joy of exploration. Browsing, on the other hand, is a purposeful seeking of information to apply to a project or problem.

When browsing, you may be deliberately seeking a defined piece of information, randomly skimming material without something definite in mind or consciously looking for inspiration.

Action Ideas.
There are no hard-and-fast rules to browsing, but these guidelines may help:

  • Skim material versus studying it in-depth.
  • A broad range of subjects can be helpful to stimulate ideas.
  • Take your time. Browsing is usually less effective if you are in a hurry. If possible, browse in a relaxed atmosphere that lets your creative mind wander.
