I believe an effective communications ministry in a church does five things. Combined, are a vital resource for the work of the body of Christ. They form a unique toolbox that would be difficult to build within a specific ministry department. I call them the Six "I's", because, coincidentally, they all begin with the letter "i".

Intention (or aligning).
In order to fulfill God's mission for the church, first we must be conformed to His Word. As we sacrifice our own agendas and plans to His agenda and His plan, our function as a commnications ministry becomes concise and clear. Take a pounding.

Imagination (or dreaming).
Generating a volume of ideas for every area of ministry. Overflowing with enthusiasm for every endeavor God allows us to be a part of. Being willing to stuff the shell with new ingredients and see how it tastes. Have a burrito.

Innovation (or planning).
Being fresh and original in all areas of communication. Presenting existing ministries in a new way. Turning in attention into interest. Making it groovy. Finding the beat and dancing to it. Get down with your bad self.

Integration (or organizing).
Combining elements, media, messages and methods so the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. How do I communicate thee? Let me count the ways.

Involvement (or serving).
Recruiting, teaching, training, coaching and enabling others to communicate ministries in all forms. Putting people and passion to work. Adding manpower to brainpower. Getting dirt under your fingernails.

Inspiration (or celebrating).
Sharing where and how God is working so that others can be inspired and join Him there. "Once upon a time there was a church communications ministry. It helped to tell the stories of people and places and happenings. It pointed eyes and ears toward Christ. It was about more than what was on paper, it was about what was in the heart. And it lived happily ever after."
